Tour Details
MAY 28 - JUNE 9, 2024
13 Days
Tour price: $3,890 (land only)
Single supplement: $1,000
You do not need to be a member of Trønderlag of America to go on this tour.
AIRFARE: LAND ONLY/AIRFARE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR PRICE.
Our tour members come from different cities in the U.S. and some join us from an earlier European destination making it difficult for us to offer air travel. You are responsible for your own air fare and other travel get to/from our arrival/departure cities. For assistance regarding booking airfare, please contact your favorite travel agent.
Planning the tour: We have taken quite a few trips to Norway where the majority of our time was in Trondheim. When we create our tours we ask our members what they would like to experience on a tour. For 2024, members indicated the tour would appeal to more travelers if we would allow them to experience more of Norway, especially first time travelers to Norway. For more variety, our 2010 tour took us north of the Polar Circle and our 2019 tour started in Oslo with a train journey to Trondheim.
Expanded Tour: For 2024 we expand again creating a tour that allows you to experience the three main cities in Norway (Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim), mountains, valleys, ferries (one, across Sognefjord, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway), a fjord cruise on Geirangerfjord, 2 extra special 4-star hotels (one where Princess Märtha Louise will be married), and a scenic journey through fjord country, ending in Trondheim where you may wish to extend your time for more personal experiences.
Tour Costs: Inflation hit Norway just as it did in the U.S. We worked hard to create an excellent small group custom tour and control its costs. We can’t exactly compare it to packaged tour company tours where they completely fill a 42-passenger bus, but our best estimates are that we have a lower cost per day and a lower single supplement and yet have more unique venues and experiences.
Come early/Stay late: Members often include this as part of a larger personal tour spending more time in Scandinavia or Europe before or after the tour. For this tour we are planning 3 nights in Oslo, 2 nights in Bergen and 2 nights in Trondheim. We have other 4 hotel stays as we journey from Bergen to Trondheim. 3 of the 4 nights are at 4-star hotels.
Extend your time in Trondheim: Our previous tours had lots of "free time" in Trondheim. Travelers may wish to personally extend their stay in Trondheim for more time with family, friends and personal experiences and we have secured a few extra rooms at our group rate. Please let us know your Trondheim hotel needs as soon as possible so we can help you schedule your hotel stay. We have contacted the Bakeriet and made a preliminary booking for five rooms for up to three nights after the tour, for those who want to do the extension. The hotel has offered the same rate as for the group: $200 per room per night ($100 per person, $80 single supplement).

Day 1 Tuesday May 28, 2024
Departure: Depart from originating city.
Day 2 Wednesday May 29 D
Oslo: Arrive at Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL). Transfer from the airport to a hotel downtown. Someone will meet everybody at the airport, and follow to “Flytoget”, a high-speed train that takes you from the airport to downtown in appr. 19 minutes. Someone will greet you at the train station and take you to the most centrally located hotel in Oslo, in the same building complex as the train station. Everybody will get the Oslo Pass, which gives unlimited rides at all public transportation in Oslo for 72 hours. We´ll meet for a welcome dinner at night. Our hotel is directly across from the Oslo Opera House which is next to the new Munch Museum and the stunning new Deichman Bjørvika Library.
Welcome Dinner.
Hotel: Comfort Hotel Grand Central.
Day 3 Thursday May 30 B, L
Oslo: City tour with a guide. We will use our Oslo Pass on public transportation (bus and underground). Places to visit include, but not limited to: Oslo City Hall, Norsk Folk Museum, Holmenkollen Ski Jump. Lunch is at Frognerseteren on Holmenkollen mountain with panoramic views of Oslo and Oslo fjord. Dinner on your own. Possible tour of the NRK-building (The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation).

Day 4 Friday May 31 B
Oslo: Oslo on your own! There is so much to see and do! We suggest you plan your Oslo free time well in advance and learn how to use the Oslo Pass to travel around in the city, and visit more than 30 museums and attractions. We highly recommend a visit to the National Museum, the largest art museum in the Nordic countries. A simple example of how you can use your pass: Travel to the harbor by City Hall, take the affordable ferry to Bygdøy island (not included with your pass) and visit the Fram Polar Explorer Museum (unfortunately The Viking Ship Museum on Bygdøy is closed until 2025). You have a mini harbor cruise, an interesting museum visit, and you are walking distance to the National Museum before or after your Fram visit. There are even food stands at the harbor if you want to grab a pølse and a soda or something else.
Hotel: Comfort Hotel Grand Central.
Day 5 Saturday June 1 B
Oslo-Bergen: We do the short walk over to the train station to board our train to Bergen. Enjoy the spectacular view as the train works it´s way through the Hallingdal valley, across the mountain and the Hardanger plateau, and down alongside the fjord towards Bergen. The train has a restaurant car and offers cold and hot dishes. Our bus will wait for us at Bergen train depot and take us to our hotel, the Radisson Blu Royal. The Blu Royal is a very nice hotel situated in Bryggen in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage site, walking distance from the Fish Market. We can recommend one of the fish restaurants in the area.
Hotel: Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Bergen
Day 6 Sunday June 2 B
Bergen: City Tour with a local guide. The tour ends at Fløibanen, the funicular (cable railway) where you use your included ticket to go up to Mount Fløien. Fløibanen is one of Norway's most visited attractions and when on the mountain top you experience spectacular views of the city. You might chose the cafe or restaurant for one of your meals. Day 10 Thursday June 6 B, L, D
Geiranger-Orkanger: We continue our tour through “Fjord Country” and will drive on the famous Trollstigen (a mountain pass that twists through eleven hairpin bends up the steep mountain sides in Romsdalen valley) . In Molde we will have lunch at Vardestua, a restaurant with a spectacular view of the city of Molde, the fjord and the mountains, often called “The Romsdal Alps”. We continue our way north and in the late afternoon we will arrive in Trøndelag and our hotel Baardshaug Herregård.
Dinner at the hotel.
Hotel: Baardshaug Herregård
Day 11 Friday June 7 B, L, D
Orkanger-Trondheim: Next door to our hotel, is Thampaviljongen, formerly known as the Norway Building, in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. We will visit this building and learn the fantastic story about it´s journey from Orkanger to the World´s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, via Lake Geneva and Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, and back to Orkanger. Trønderlag of America and two of its members have a special connection to the Norway Building. After the visit here, we will drive to Brekstad on the Fosen peninsula, and the Austrått Fortress. The installation has the 800 ton, three-gun turret, from the damaged battleship Gneisenau buried in the mountain. Lunch. We continue our drive on Fosen, before we take the ferry across the fjord to Trondheim and our home at Hotel Bakeriet for the last few days of our trip. Built in the 1800's the Bakeriet was originally the city bakery where 12,000 people got their bread on a daily basis.

Day 12 Saturday June 8 B, D
Trondheim: Morning group tours of Nidaros Cathedral and Sverresborg Trøndelag Folk Museum followed a stop for our "traditional" Trondheim group tour photo. The bus will return to the hotel where the rest of the day is on your own. Lunch is not included but for those wanting to, the bus will take them to Tyholttårnet. The restaurant at the top of the 407 foot tower rotates about once per hour, so during our lunch we will be able to sit still and enjoy a 360-degree view of Trondheim and it's surroundings.
A light evening meal is served at the hotel.
Hotel: Best Western Plus Hotel Bakeriet
Day 13 Sunday June 9
Trondheim-Depart: Fly back to the USA from Trondheim Airport (TRD). We will try to accommodate everybody´s departure time so that everybody will have transfer to the airport from the hotel.
