My grandmother and her great grandmother were sisters from Verdal in the Trondelag region. On my mother's side, I am also related to Norwegian immigrants from Rendalen in the Osterdalen region of Hedmark, now Innlandet. So I would very much like to be able to visit both areas of Norway.

I am interested in your 2024 tour. Hope to get my sister to travel with me.  Three generations of our Norwegian ancestors, including my great grandfather, came from Storen in 1883. They were from Vold farm, which they took as their surname, it changed to Wold, then Wald (that's me!) I see you have gone to Roros in the past and I would be very interested to go there. I've heard it's quite historic. I believe my ancestor was working there before leaving (have to check my notes) and several further back ancestors lived and mined there.

Update 8-9-2023: My daughter, Katherine Wald, is very interested in the Norway trip. With 3 of us, my sister would do a single.

I am interested in next year’s tour if it is within my budget.  Has Tronderlag ever included Røros, the UNESCO world heritage site, in the tour?  One branch of my ancestors is from a farm outside Røros.

My father is in hospice right now and after he passes away, I will have to sell his home during the spring of 2024.  It's very hard for me to make any plans at this time.

Hei!  I would like to add Sam Christenson and Amy Christenson to the 2024 tour list. Also, I mentioned to our neighbor that Tronderlag is planning this tour and she asked if she and up to four of her children could register even though they are not members of T o A.  Is it possible for her to join and bring some or all of her adult children?

I am interested in participating in the 2024 Norway Tour.   Please add me to the list for the tour.  I hope the tour will spend a little time in rural Trøndelag as well as the large cities.  I am especially interested in the Beitstad area as both my husband and I have relatives from there.

The 2024 Trøndelag tour sounds interesting and I will definitely take a look at it when it comes out. I might have to wait one more year after that, however, as I have 2 years before retirement and would be much easier to schedule after that happens.

Back when my grandfather was born in the 1800's the farm was known as Klefåslien. One of my grandfather's sisters married a Fossum (actually Fossmarken but somewhere along the way it became Fossum) and their son purchased the farm. Today the farm is known as Lia and Geir Petter Fossum resides there now. It is on the east end of Lake Ausetvatnet and for farm number, I can't remember how that translates to English but in my Norwegian book it says:  g.r.n.r. 49, b.r.n.r. 3

THE PROBABLE ITINERARY:

GENERAL: We continue with the original idea stated in our June 2023 newsletter: Visit the three main cities in Norway (Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim) with structured and free time in each city. Start in Oslo, travel by train to Bergen and from Bergen, along the coast to Trondheim with day trips from Trondheim.

TOUR DATES: Probably the first two weeks of June but haven’t selected the specific days.

TOUR LENGTH: 10-12 days, but we are considering 12 days this time.

TOUR SIZE: SMALL GROUP TOUR (We have done 16 person and slightly larger tours.

TOUR COST: Norway is expensive. We are determining the estimated cost for the land part of an escorted tour.  As an example, ten years ago our 2014 10-day tour was just over $3,000 USD per person sharing a room with a modest $475 single supplement. AIRFARE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR PRICE. Our tour members come from different cities in the U.S. and some join us from an earlier European destination making it difficult for us to offer air travel. You are responsible for your own air fare and other travel to get to our departure city. The exchange rate will affect your costs and is currently quite good.

TRAVEL IN NORWAY:  We use whatever works. The bus/van is simply a tool to help make that day happen as best we can. Sometimes we use a standard 42 passenger tour bus even with a small group. For one tour we used a 16 passenger Mercedes van for the travelers and a trailer for our luggage. This is nothing like being on your European bus tour with lots of driving every day staying in a different location each night, checking out very early in the morning and pushing on to your next destination. We get some place and maximize being there.

FLEXIBILITY: You can come and go as you please. You just need to let us know you will not be with us on certain days and be able to join us if we have moved on to another location. This seems to happen more for our day trips out of Trondheim. People have said "I'm not going with you today, I'm having too much success at the archives", or "This is crazy, I just met family I did not know I had and they invited me to spend a few days with them".  There will be no reduction in your tour cost if you choose to skip any parts of the scheduled tour.

Come early/Stay late: Members often include this as part of a larger personal tour spending more time in Scandinavia or Europe before or after the tour.

SUGGESTED REQUESTS FOR THE TOUR (so far): NOT ALL will be able to be included. Mange takk to everyone who suggested specific experiences for our tour.

JON ORKANGER NOTES
BACKGROUND
For those who don’t know, Erling and Jon helped the Norwegians with their activities celebrating the move of Norway House, originally in Illinois for the 1893 Columbian Eposition, back to Orkanger from the U.S. In recognition for their efforts, both Erling and Jon received part ownership in the Norway House (symbolic only) each receiving a 1/1,000 certificate). Both were acknowledged at Norway House in Orkanger during our 2019 tour.

Erling conducted the Norway House project group U.S. tour which included an Illinois State Historical Society event with the placement of a historical plaque at the original U.S. site in 1893. Jon provided advertising and promotion support,  a special web site, Norwegian flags for the ceremony, and brought greetings from Tronderlag of America, the Norwegian Consulate in Chicago, The Norwegian National League and other Chicago Norwegian-American organizations.

By being there in 2019 and returning in 2024 we might strengthen our relationship with Norway House and give us the opportunity of having a recurring day trip while in Trondheim during future Tronderlag of America Heritage tours.
